Maidenbower Cubs Explore Baron’s Cave – A Journey Through History

Date: 4th Apr 2025 Author: Gareth Thrower

Last night, MB Cubs embarked on an exciting adventure to Baron’s Cave, part of the historic Reigate Cave system. Our tour was led by two dedicated volunteers from the Wealden Cave Society—who are also Scout leaders themselves!

Before heading underground, we explored the site’s fascinating history. Our guides explained how the area once housed a castle, showing us the remnants of the wet and dry moats that surrounded it. Then, we descended into the cave system, which is uniquely formed entirely of pure sand.

Dating back to 1066, the caves are rich in history—quite literally etched into the walls! As we navigated the tunnels, we learned about the many ways the caves have been used over the centuries. We even experienced complete darkness, a truly memorable moment for the Cubs. To top off an incredible evening, we had the special honor of investing a new Cub into the pack while deep within the caves.

A huge thank you to our fantastic guides for sharing their knowledge and making this experience so unforgettable!
