Section Helper

What you’ll do

Section Helpers provide an extra pair of hands to support our volunteer team during weekly meetings and activities.

You don’t need to plan activities, run a section or take on any leadership responsibilities. Simply turn up, get involved and help wherever you’re needed.

Your role may include:

  • Helping leaders during weekly meetings and activities.
  • Supporting young people to take part in games, challenges and activities.
  • Helping set up and pack away equipment.
  • Keeping an eye out for young people who may need a little extra help or encouragement.
  • Helping maintain a safe, welcoming and enjoyable environment.
  • Getting involved in activities alongside the young people.
  • Helping with occasional events, trips or other activities if you’re available.
  • Following the instructions and guidance of the section leaders.

What we’re looking for

You don’t need any previous Scouting experience or specialist skills.

We’re simply looking for someone who is:

  • Friendly and approachable.
  • Reliable when they are able to attend.
  • Happy to get involved and have fun.
  • Comfortable working with young people.
  • Willing to listen to and support the section leaders.

How often do I need to attend?

It’s flexible.

You can come along every week, once a month, or whenever your circumstances allow. We understand that work, family and other commitments can make regular volunteering difficult.

There’s no expectation that you need to attend every meeting.

The important thing is that when you’re there, you can provide an extra pair of hands and help the section team.

Training and checks

As you’ll be volunteering regularly with young people, you will need to complete the appropriate DBS check and safeguarding requirements.

You don’t need to arrive with Scouting knowledge or experience. The section team will show you what to do and provide any support you need.

The perfect way to get involved

Being a Section Helper is a great way to see what Scouting is all about without committing to a leadership role.

If you’ve ever thought “I’d like to help, but I don’t have the time to become a leader”, this could be the role for you.
